Flores is a World Unlike Any Other

Flores sits within one of the most extraordinary biological zones on Earth – a region scientists call “Wallacea,” the transitional belt between Asia and Australia. Wallacea is a biogeographical designation for a group of mainly Indonesian islands separated by deep-water straits from the Asian and Australian continental shelves (Less Car, More Life).
Unlike most islands, Flores has never been connected to the Asian mainland due to the deep waters of the Lombok Strait and other deep oceanic trenches (Indie Traveller). This is the same legendary boundary that naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace studied, and the Wallace Line separates the biogeographic realms of Asia and Wallacea – a transitional zone where to the west you find organisms related to Asiatic species, and to the east, a mixture of Asian and Australian origins (Indonesia Overview).
